The world
takes shape.
A historical-fantasy MMORPG. A village coming to life. A first look at the work behind Palatinus Regius.
We’re building a world to return to. Palatinus Regius is a third-person historical-fantasy MMORPG, set against a realm of borderland villages, royal strongholds and the legends of the Twelve Peers.
The ambition is a persistent online world with lasting progression. That starts with somewhere worth being. For us, it starts on a rain-darkened lane in Oakhaven.
A nobody.
A reason to rise.
Our world draws on the Frankish age of Charlemagne. Royal banners hang above forgotten borderlands. The songs of the Twelve Peers carry all the way from the king’s court to the mud outside a village blacksmith.
That is where Luc’s story begins. An orphan who scavenges scrap metal to survive, he holds on to his father’s rusted iron dagger and the belief that courage can matter more than bloodline.
When mercenary raiders attack Oakhaven, Luc tries to defend a small child with a broken wooden pitchfork. He is outmatched. But Count Roland, one of the Twelve Peers, sees his courage and leaves him a silver coin. A small act becomes the start of a three-hundred-mile journey to Aachen.
Luc remains at the centre of the canonical story as we develop the wider online world. We will share more about how that story fits multiplayer as those designs take shape.
Built with edges.
Full of atmosphere.
Thick masonry. Overlapping slate. Broken wet cobbles. Oakhaven’s deliberately faceted look gives the realm its own silhouette, while firelight and cold dusk make the village feel lived in.
Luc’s layered peasant clothing belongs to the same weathered world. Beyond the gate, distance and mist suggest the road ahead. We want places with character, from the shape of a roof to the light reflected in a puddle.
The faceted appearance is an art direction, with native third-person action built in Unreal Engine. It does not imply block building or terrain destruction.
We label concept artwork and actual development screenshots throughout this site. Concepts show where we want to go. Screenshots show what is in the build.
The first streets.
The first connections.
Oakhaven is taking shape in the development build. Luc can move through its streets with animated third-person movement and camera collision. Native lighting, reflective shallow puddles and roof smoke bring the environment to life.
We are also testing multiplayer movement and reconnection with independent game clients. These are foundations for the MMORPG; the complete persistent world and its progression systems are still being built.
- In the current buildOakhaven, Luc, third-person movement, camera collision, lighting and atmosphere.
- In development testingShared movement, client connections and reconnection.
- On the road aheadCombat, the opening rescue, dialogue, audio and persistent progression.
A world worth
coming back to.
The next pieces of Luc’s opening adventure are combat, the Oakhaven rescue, dialogue and audio. The wider realm and lasting progression grow from that foundation.
Palatinus Regius will be distributed for macOS and Windows directly from regiusonline.com. The game is in early development; public downloads, a playtest, a release date and system requirements have not been announced.
We will keep sharing the world as it takes shape. For now, take a look around Oakhaven. This is where it begins.
